  • Brain and spine
  • Heart and blood vessels
  • Breasts
  • Bones and joints
  • Internal organs such as the uterus, prostate, etc.

Preparing for an MRI Scan

  • Generally, you can eat, drink and take your usual medications on the day of your MRI scan, unless otherwise advised by your doctor. In some cases, they may advise you not to eat anything for four hours before the scan. It may be best to consult your physician about this.
  • If you have any metal implants or a pacemaker, it is very important that you inform the radiographer before the procedure.
  • You can let them know of any allergies or medical conditions you may have.
  • If you become pregnant, let them know in advance.
  • Avoid wearing clothing with a metal zipper or buttons. This includes wearing underwear with ropes or hooks. You will need to remove these if they interfere with the scan.
  • Avoid wearing any jewelry as you may be asked to remove it.
  • Keep your face mask and disinfectant close at hand to protect yourself from infections.

Before scanning

On the day of the MRI scan service, you are capable to eat, drink and obtain any medications as normal, unless otherwise required.

In some cases, you may be asked to drink a large amount of water in advance. This depends on the scanned area.

When you arrive at the Best Diagnostic center in Hyderabad, you will usually be asked to complete a list of questions about your health and medical history. This helps medical staff to ensure safe scanning. Learn more about who can and cannot have an MRI scan.

As the MRI scanner delivers a powerful magnetic field, it is necessary to clear any metal objects from your body, including:

  • watches
  • jewelry, such as earrings and necklaces
  • piercings, such as earrings, nipples, and nose
  • dentures (false teeth)
  • hearing aids
  • wigs (some wigs contain metal strips)
  • Any important items can usually be stored in a secure lock.

Compare dye

Some MRI scans include having a comparative dye injection. This makes certain tissues and blood vessels more clearly visible and more detailed.

A different dye may have caused tissue and organ damage in people with severe kidney disease. If you have a history of kidney disease, you may have a blood test to find out how well your kidneys are doing and whether it is safe to continue with the scanner.

You should also inform staff if you have a history of allergies or blood clotting problems before the injection.

During the scan

An MRI scanner is a short cylinder recessed at both ends. You will sleep on a bed with an engine mounted inside the scanner. In some cases, a frame can be placed over a scanned body, such as the head or chest. This frame contains sensors that capture signals sent to your body during scanning and can help create a better quality image.

While you are filming, a friend or family member may be allowed to sit with you in the room. Often children can have a parent with them. Anyone living with you will be asked if you have a pacemaker or other metal equipment in your body. They will also need to follow the same guidelines regarding clothing and the removal of metal items.

To prevent photosynthesis, it is very important to keep the body part of the scanner motionless throughout the scanner until the photographer tells you that you are comfortable.

One scan can take from a few seconds to three or four minutes. You may be requested to keep your breath during a quick scan.

You can usually listen to music through headphones during scanning. You will be removed from the scan when your scanning is complete.

After scanning

An MRI scan is usually performed as an outpatient procedure.  After scanning, you can resume normal operations immediately.

However, if you have held a sedative, a friend or relative will require to take you home and remain with you for the first 24 hours. It is not safe to drive, use heavy equipment or drink alcohol 24 hours after bedtime.

Your MRI scanner needs to be evaluated by a radiologist and possibly consulted with other specialists. This means that you are less likely to know the results of your scan faster.

The radiology specialist will transmit information to the doctor. It usually gets less time for the results of the MRI scan to come out, unless urgently required.
