Why Ultrasound Scans are used in Pregnancy?

Ultrasound imaging employs sound waves to create images of the inner body. It helps identify the causes of pain, inflammation, and infection in the internal organs and examine the fetus in pregnant women. In infants, Radiology specialists often use Ultrasound Scan services to analyze the brain, hips, and spine. It is also helpful to direct biopsies, diagnose heart conditions, and diagnose damage after a heart attack. Ultrasound is safe and radiant.

This process does not require any special adjustments. Your Radiology specialist will tell you how to prepare for Ultrasound Scan, including whether you should eat or drink in advance. Remember that you should remove the jewelry at home and wear loose and comfortable clothes. You may need to change into a garment.

What is the ultrasound scan used?

Depending on the stage of your pregnancy, scans can:

  • Check that your child has a beating heart.
  • If you are pregnant with one or more twins.
  • Get an ectopic pregnancy when the embryo enters the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube.
  • Check if you have a molar pregnancy, in which there is an abnormal placenta and usually not a live baby.
  • Find out the cause of any bleeding that may occur.
  • Plan the exact date of your pregnancy by measuring your baby.
  • Find out why blood tests were so rare.
  • Help to perform safe diagnostic tests, such as chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis, by showing the baby's location and placenta.
  • Examine your child to see if all their organs are growing normally.
  • Get some congenital malformations such as spina bifida.
  • Measure your child's growth rate with a serial scan.
  • Check blood flow between the placenta and the baby.
  • Check placental aging or calculation.

In Pregnancy

Typically, two scans are performed in the first trimester.

Dating and performance scanner, between 6 and 9 weeks of gestation.

The first morphology scan or nuchal translucency (NT) scan is between 11 weeks and two days and 13 weeks and six days of pregnancy.

Your first scan can be up to six weeks if you see your doctor as soon as you miss a period. After a while, you are more likely to get your first scan at eight or nine weeks of pregnancy if you see your doctor.

However, you should check with your Radiology Specialist immediately (from four weeks onwards) if:

  • Your home pregnancy test is a bit positive
  • Spots, bleeding, or abdominal pain
  • You have had a miscarriage before
  • You are pregnant after childless treatment

In such cases, your doctor may recommend that you do a scan in advance.

Your first scan helps to:

  • Confirm your pregnancy
  • Check that the embryo sac is inserted into the uterus to prevent ectopic pregnancy
  • Find your child's heartbeat
  • See that you are pregnant with one or more children
  • Remove molar pregnancy
  • Examine your uterus, eggs, and organs around you

An early six-week scan is usually a transvaginal scan (TVS). At this stage, your baby is generally too small and too low for your tummy to be visible through a tummy tuck. Transvaginal scanning allows the ultrasound surgeon to place the probe very close to your baby and get a detailed picture.

TVS is usually done between the sixth and ninth weeks of your pregnancy.

Your ultrasound doctor will gently insert a small probe called a transducer into your vagina. It should not be uncomfortable. The transducer will be covered with a latex sheath and well coated with gel.

You may feel uncomfortable with the TVS view, but the more relaxed you are, the easier it will be for a doctor to file an investigation. If your muscles are tight, the process may be uncomfortable for you.
